Harder to get Denmark permanent residence permit

The government and Dansk Folkeparti are tightening the rules for foreigners seeking a permanent residence permit in Denmark.

- A foreigner will have to earn his/her residence permit by collecting points. For example by working, and by taking Danish language training courses. If you make an effort, you will be able to earn your permanent residence permit faster, Minister for Integration, Birthe Rønn Hornbech, tells daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

Social benefits a no go.

The parties want to make it impossible to earn a permanent residency permit if the applicant has received social benefits in the period leading up to the time of application. Additionally, foreigners who are handed sentences of unconditional imprisonment for social benefits fraud could be deported if the proposal is implemented.

Harsher punishment - for Danes as well

The proposed tightening of the law also implies harsher punishments for Danes who help rejected asylum seekers - either by sheltering them, or by setting up companies with the purpose of employing rejected asylum seekers in order to prevent their deportation.

- We are taking aim at those who cheat and swindle and don't want to play an active part in Danish society. They should be made aware that they are not welcome in Denmark. And the large number of immigrants who are in Denmark and are making a positive contribution to the national economy should be made aware that they are welcome, says spokesman on integration affairs for Venstre, Karsten Lauritzen.
